I'd always been a runner (although not marathon distances), since some 55 years ago. About 10 years ago, my feet were in pain. I had no idea from what. I bumped into a podiatrist in my community, told him my symptoms, and, bingo, he said immediately, "You need a ankle support for flat feet". But my arch wasn't flat! Yes it was he said, and showed my as, in his office, he laid his palm to my feet. Pressure on the foot now flattens my feet, perhaps because the tendons have "loosened up" over the years. Arch supports definitely took the pain away.
