Barefoot or shod?

The Science of Sport has an interesting article in which he analyzes a new study comparing barefoot running to shod running.

While he says it is not "the last word" on this debate, the study does give a big boost to the supporters of barefoot running.

It is well worth a read if you are thinking about going barefoot, or looking to resolve some of your running injuries that just won't go away...

I have done two short runs in my VFFs. My calves are killing me. Is this what happened to you the first couple of times out?

nope. I was surprised though. Everyone had told me it would because running like this uses different muscles than shod running - it uses calf muscles more and I think front of upper thigh (quadriceps?), so it makes sense calves would hurt. I always had good calf muscles, so I just chalked it up to that

Lucky you. People were coming up to me in shul this morning and asking why I was walking funny. I will need three or four days until I can get the VFFs on again. I am in agony - and I run 8 - 10 miles a day (with shoes.)

When transitioning, some people run 1 mile in vibrams, then complete the rest of the run in running shoes. Slowly build up the barefoot distance until you no longer need shoes.
